Robbie and his mates joined in a great day at the carnival. They got a bronze medal coming an easy 3rd. This was made easier by the total number of applicant groups .... but what the hell. great day with wonderful stormy winter weather to remind us that we live on dartmoor and this is nearly November!!!

Half Term at Saltacrease

Well the Prices very kindly invited Tess and us down to Saltacrease. A really lovely day ... mucking about in boats; great company and good fun all round . Molly nd Rob joined Fi Porter and the other children canoeing in the Erme Estuary. Tee spurred on by her braver relatives took to the water as she never has done before.
the other revelation was the youth of today taking to bathing for very long periods of time .. all in the cause of cleanliness no doubt!!!!

Walk from Torcross to Dartmouth

IMGP5243.JPG

A pleasant 10 mile stroll along the coast . Carrel and I headed off along Slapton Sands and then across the fields to Strete thence to Stoke Fleming for refreshments at The GREEN DRAGON.
There is rather more road walking here than is ideal but it is charming none the less.
The entry into Dartmouth is through woods and then right down to the shore. After going past the castle ( where you can get refreshments) you then saunter into town

Then you can go back to the car at Torcross carpark via the Number 93 bus from the south pontoon. There are buses at 3.30pm and just after 5.00pm.

This is not a classic ... but pleasant enough

The Lakes 2007

Al Scott Smith, Dave Greaves, Dave Cole, John Serenyi, John Fewster, Tim Bayliss, Rich Steel, Martin Wills & I have just finished a brilliant weekend in Borrowdale in the Lakes.
We were based in the Langstrath Hotel a great small hotel far up the valley. We arrived at various times during Thursday ready for a wonderful walk right up the valley over on the Friday . This of course followed a rather liquid evening. We were led in this as ever by Bayliss. The walks over the next two days were truly wonderful , awsome and suitably knackering!
The company was as ever fantastic. The hotel was largely a big success. The beer was varied and excellent. The food was really exceptional. The owners were friendly and welcoming and even tolerated a choral session late on saturday! The staff were great fun , helpful and kept a decrepid bunch of old men happy.
John Fewster & I had to leave early on Sunday so missed what would have been a special walk in the sunshine on Sunday. We did however leknowing that England had beaten the French and were in the RWC Final yet again. A great weekend just got even better

Here is the website of the hotel . Strongly recommended for people who do not long for footballers wives hotels.

The Okehampton team seems to be going from strength to strength and this year seems to have about 18 players , so there should be real competition for places. The first game of the season was at home v Tavistock .... and on the weekend that England beat Australia I am pleased to announce that we slaughtered them 5-4!!

Thisis astunning walk round some of the most beautiful parts of the coastal path.
We did this in glorious weather in early October. You can catch a small Ferry by the Ferry Boat In across to East Portlemouth.. Really lovely , the path heads west around the headland. If you are lucky enough to be at low tide you can walk along the beach. To the west you can see North Sands on the other side of theEstuary. On the edge you can see Fort Charles .. the last outpost of royalism in the west. It was destroyed by parliament .
You can get wonderful views as you round the headland and then head East towards Gammon Head and Prawle point. between the tow is a beautiful beach that can be reached by asmall path.
From Prawle Point you are on a raised beach all the way to Linnacombe before ascending the hill to the Start.
Here thecoast suddenyl heads amost due north. You cansee the great bay that continues on around asfar as the Dart river and beyond. Down below you to the left is the ruined village of Hallsands taken by astorm in 1917 then you walk on through to Beesands . Here if you require asmall pub on the shore. ( The Cricket Arms) ... then on to Torcross

Soar Cove to Salcombe

IMGP4690.JPG
Originally uploaded by drtombell1.

Soar Cove to Salcombe must be one of the most beautiful stretches of all the coastal path. A beautiful stretch of path and then some where to the west of North Cove in Salcombe there were two of the most beautiful beaches.
I walked on to North Beach and then Salcombe. Then on the way back from Salcombe I took the ferry ... and then an inland route by Lower and Middle Soar Farm ....

September Walk 2007

IMGP4730.JPG Where it all began
Originally uploaded by drtombell1.

As Sarah & I have been loafing abroad all summerRon and Carolyn kindly organised the September Walk this year. What a cracker. New new walkers .. welcome to Robin and Carol. ... and this year an impressive effort by the kids ... Molly, Alice and Helen as well as Robbie, Tom and Jack .. they all walked from Ottterton to Sidmouth with scarcely a moan ...
Having walked to the sea at Budleigh Libby had to leave us. The rest walked on to Sidmouth for a great lunch at the Anchor .... a superb pub with great service.
Fully replenished we set off for Branscombe. This latter half done in two halves. Basically as in life the women ahead and the men folk struggling on behind
At last we arrived at The Masons Arms at Branscombe. Great evening and food and company. Sadly I was a reduced man by Sunday and was sent home for an early bath. The rest enjoyed a circular walk to Beer.
Thanks to everyone for a wonderful weekend . In particular a big thanks to the Smiths for all their hard work.
